SA-25-05: Route 220 Alternate (Cloverdale Road) - Botetourt County

SA2505 Overview Map

From Eastpark Drive to Read Mountain Road

Project Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify project recommendations for the Route 220 Alternate (Cloverdale Road) corridor within Botetourt County. This study will focus on improving roadway safety, capacity preservation (to keep traffic flowing smoothly), multimodal accessibility/connectivity (bicycle and transit), and transportation demand management (TDM) needs. The project recommendations from this study may be developed into funding applications for SMART SCALE Round 7 and other transportation funding programs.

Survey

The Phase 2 survey regarding proposed alternatives for the Route 220 Alternate (Cloverdale Road) corridor between Eastpark Drive and Read Mountain Road in Botetourt County was completed in December 2025. The study team will use the input obtained from the public as it refines the alternatives and performs planning-level cost estimation before selecting the preferred alternative(s) to address the identified needs.

Route 220 Alternate at Eastpark Drive

The right-turn lane along Eastpark Drive is proposed to be extended to reduce delays.

The left-turn lanes along Route 220 Alternate are proposed to be shifted toward the medians to increase sight distance and reduce the potential for left-turn crashes.

Concurrent phasing is proposed for Eastpark Drive and Exxon to allow for simultaneous turns which would improve traffic operations and reduce delays at the intersection.

Route 220 Alternate at Read Mountain Road

Two improvement options are proposed for the intersection of Route 220 Alternate at Read Mountain Road. The following improvements are proposed with both options:

  • Extend the left-turn lane along northbound Route 220 Alternate at Read Mountain Road to reduce delays and accommodate left-turning vehicles.
  • Extend the right-turn lane along eastbound Read Mountain Road to reduce delays and accommodate right-turning vehicles.
  • Add a right-turn overlap phase for eastbound right-turns from Read Mountain Road to reduce delays and allow right turns to turn on a green arrow.
  • Install protected-only left-turn signal phasing during the PM peak hour for the northbound Route 220 Alternate left turns to Read Mountain Road that would allow left turns to turn on a green arrow only.

Route 220 Alternate - Option 1 - Offset Left-Turn Lane

Option 1 includes offsetting the left-turn lane (shifting it toward the median) to improve sight distance and reduce the potential for left-turn crashes.

Route 220 Alternate - Option 2 - Continuous Green-T

Option 2 includes a Continuous Green-T intersection that would allow the northbound Route 220 Alternate through traffic to flow through the intersection without stopping. An acceleration lane would be installed within the median for left turns from Read Mountain Road. The southbound Route 220 Alternate U-turn lane would be removed. A Continuous Green-T intersection is an innovative intersection design. Click here to learn more about a Continuous Green-T.
